Web Design | Distant Friends Student International Social Media Penpal Program
"Distant Friends" is a safe and educational international social media program, connecting children from different countries and helping them to learn about each other's cultures. It is an initial pilot program between 6th graders in Ohio and New Zealand. It would be used strictly in schools with safety policies in position such as message filters, teacher approval, etc.

To begin this project I interviewed several teachers regarding traditional penpal programs, researched Ohio's educational standards and existing adolescent social networks.

The development of this idea included the initial research, wireframes, a sitemap, type and color palettes, holistic site overview and final designs. All content uses meta tags so it can be filtered and present content in multiple ways as well as being searchable through maps and tags. It is based around traditional school related items as the concept with "My Locker", "Notes", "Explore", etc. Students participate in various activities on the site to promote learning such as journaling, sending messages, joining groups, adding friends and working through the sites incentives program.

Store Concept | Gents
This project was a combined environmental, packaging and store concept design project. The "Gents" brand I developed was a men's high end product line focusing on the modern man, with a nod to the historic idea of the gentleman tied into the branding and store design. The store itself was a retail space as well as a barber shop, highlighting and selling the Gents products, while also using them on barber shop customers. The target market of the Gents brand and store includes men ages 25–40.

Gent’s look and feel was derived from both classic and modern inspirations. It incorporated both serif and sans-serif typefaces to show the contrast between vintage and modern styles. The store itself is broken into two areas: merchandising and barber shop with spatial emphasis on the merchandising side. The interior design of the shop further emphasized the Gents brand with both modern fixtures juxtaposed with antique equipment and the feel of a classic barber shop. The brand and store itself were aimed at establishing the high end product line and its corresponding clientele.

Web Design | World Learning Organization Interactive Timeline
This project, completed during an internship for the graphics firm Informatics Studio out of Pittsburgh, PA. For the company's 80th anniversary, this interactive timeline was designed for The World Learning Organization. They required a timeline that would work with their pre-existing branding style and that would work within their existing website and content managing system. The images above include two separate concepts developed for the company. The first set shows the final chosen concept, the second set is an earlier explored idea for the timeline. Both can be navigated in multiple ways (by location/ country, world events, decade, or chronological history).

My work for this project began with research of web and print time lines to serve as inspiration. This was followed by hand sketches, wireframes and finally computer design concepts. I was responsible for the design of the entire timeline from conception to images shown above. This project is currently being developed at Informatics Studio and will go live sometime within the first quarter of 2012.

Print | Typographic Children's Book
For this project we were asked to select a children's book whose illustrations were not typographically dominant and redesign it using typography primarily. I chose "Hen Hears Gossip" by Megan McDonald, which is a barnyard story version of the common telephone game of rumors. The story began with rumors which were spread causing an escalation in the middle of the book and downward spiral following it. This was the reasoning behind the concept for the double sided book. The book opens from both the front cover and back, following the story line. All typography was hand drawn type and my own illustrations were used to tell the story.

Identity | PMBA Clients
I designed the above identities for various clients while working at both Glyphix and The Tannery. Power Mike & Co. was a client for Glyphix. He is part of the PMBA program. PMBA is a program set up for minority business owners. Each PMBA client receives a new identity and we also provide business card, letterhead and a tri-fold brochure. Power Mike is an electrical contractor but he also does commercial fire-stopping. He wanted an identity that encompassed both sides of his business. The final logo uses the lightning bolt as a symbol for the electrical side and the “O” is a symbol that resembles the fire-stopping barriers they install. Boone Enterprises was a client for the Tannery. He is also a member of the PMBA program. Boone Enterprises is a office supply dealer in the Cleveland area.

Print | Healing Stanzas
Healing Stanzas is an annual collaborative project between the Kent State University Wick Poetry Center and Glyphix student run graphic design studio. I designed a layout to feature the poem "Mostly", written by Rita Schlanger of the Lerner College of Medicine. My interpretation of this poem utilizes a grid, warm color palette, and mountain landscape, which to me symbolizes a combination of the elements Rita Schlanger discussed in "Mostly". Our poster set won the Gold Award in the Akron ADDYS in the professional public service campaigns category.

Design Exercise | NutraSpoon
The intent of this short concept exercise was to encourage people to slow down from their average fast paced routines. This could be interpreted in any way we wanted. I chose to design a product that would help people to slow down their eating in order to fight obesity and discourage overeating. The Nutra Spoon was designed to alert the user between each bite with a vibrating tone which would stop when the spoon was set down.

This website redesign was completed for the Western Reserve during my work at The Tannery design studio in Kent. The Western Reserve is a spine and pain clinic in Kent, Ohio which relies on its website to attract new patients to their specialized practice. The main goals during this project were to improve the navigation of the website, and to restructure how the information was presented to simplify the user’s experience and promote the quality of their organization. I incorporated a ‘bread crumb’ navigation to achieve this, and introduced links to the clinic’s standard forms to add a level of convenience and further simplify the user experience.

Print | Broadleaf Marketing Pocket Folder
This project, completed while working at Glyphix student staffed design firm of Kent State University with co-designer Kate Hardy, was designed to attract new clients to the locally owned and operated Broadleaf Partners, LLC investment firm. This process involved working with William Hoover, the CEO of Broadleaf Partners to better understand their company and approach to business. We then updated their marketing brochure by restructuring the sequence of information and creating visual solutions to easily explain the investment process to new clients. The folder cover was printed offset 4/4 on Neenah Classic Linen paper. The booklet was printed on Neenah Classic Crest paper and saddle-stitched.
